The European Union is set to announce on Tuesday its intention to prohibit any new agreements for Russian gas by the conclusion of this year. Additionally, the EU plans to gradually eliminate existing contracts with Moscow by the end of 2027. This decision comes from three EU officials who disclosed this information to Reuters.

The European Commission is set to release a roadmap on Tuesday outlining its strategy to phase out Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027. This roadmap will detail a pledge to introduce a ban on new Russian gas import agreements and spot contracts by the conclusion of 2025, with a proposal expected to be put forth in June.

Officials, who have requested anonymity to discuss confidential plans, have revealed that the roadmap will include a commitment to propose a legal ban on Russian gas and liquefied natural gas imports under existing contracts by the end of 2027. It is important to note that these plans are subject to change before they are officially published.
